Maximum Medical Improvement- is your workers' compensation case over?
MAXIMUM MEDICAL IMPROVEMENT - IS YOUR WORKERS' COMPENSATION CASE OVER?
At some point in your case, your doctor may say that you have reached Maximum Medical Improvement. That means that in the doctor’s opinion your treatment options have been exhausted and you will not get any better than you are at that moment.
There are a few things to know about this. One is that this is not a reason for your benefits to be suspended. In some jurisdictions the achievement of “MMI” does mean that and adjusters can err in suspending your benefits. Don’t stand for that without getting assistance.
MMI also may mean that the doctor is ready to rate you for permanent partial disability. This is an additional benefit that you are entitled to that is not dependent on your ability to work, but rather based on what function the injury has robbed you of permanently.
Finally, if you feel that there may be additional treatments that have not been explored then you can ask for a change in physicians to one who will provide more care. Often doctors just get tired to treating someone who is not progressing as they anticipated and run out of ideas. That is why the law provides that you have the absolute right to change physicians once in the course of the claim.
The decision to change physicians or push for a higher Permanent Partial Impairment percentage number is one that an experienced workers’ compensation attorney such as Kenneth R. Croy can help you with. Please call for a free consultation at 770-422-0574 before making this important
