Getting good medical treatment is very important.  However, because the workers' compensation system allows the employer to control treatment in many cases, it is more complex than picking a personal doctor and making an appointment.

Sometimes, the first doctor you treat with will not provide the treatment you need.  You may need to change doctors to recover from your injury. There are several potential ways to change doctors in a Workers’ Compensation case.  One way is through the panel of physicians.  An injured simply selects another doctor on the employer’s posted panel of physicians and notifies the employer of that selection. An employee has the right to this onetime change without any agreement from the insurer.

In addition to this one time right to change physicians on the panel, an injured worker (either individually or through an attorney) can simply reach an agreement with the employer and workers’ compensation insurance company to change to a different doctor. There is nothing requiring the doctor who is agreed upon come from the panel of physicians.

If an agreement can't be reached then an injured worker can also file a motion with the State Board of Workers' Compensation to treat with a certain doctor. If this is granted then the new doctor is chosen, even if the employer and insurer object.
